Who is PEACE?
Since its establishment in 2004, Peace Education and Community Empowerment (PEACE) has evolved to become a dedicated virtual exchange organization with focus on global dialogue and youth empowerment. Based in Sindh & Punjab Province, many PEACE programs are focused all over the country including Lahore, Hyderabad, Islamabad and Karachi; Before partnering with GNG, PEACE has partnered with over 200 organizations and schools in Pakistan and around the world. PEACE has formally partnered with GNG since 2013, providing local expertise and support in implementation of virtual exchange programs throughout Pakistan. Under the Campfire & Global Citizens in Action program, PEACE has connected (number of schools?) Pakistani schools in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Karachi, Lahore, and Bhit Shah with schools in New York, Washington DC, Virginia, Kentucky, Los Angeles, and Georgia in the United States till date.
Who is Global Nomads Group (GNG)?
GNG is an international NG0, which seeks to provide all young people with an international academic exchange during their education. Through virtual exchange programs, GNG bridges cultural misconceptions and prepares students with the 21st century competencies to be career ready: the abilities to collaborate, empathize, and interact effectively with individuals from around the world. Since founding in 1998, GNG has offered programs in 55 countries, on all seven continents, reaching more than one million young people.
What is Campfire?
Campfire is an academic virtual exchange program that pairs international classrooms using a project based learning curriculum and technology to build students’ skills in communication, collaboration, and critical thinking. In 2017 PEACE in partnership with GNG, paired 17 classrooms in Pakistan with 17 classrooms in the United States, allowing students to learn side-by-side about their communities and their role as global citizens.
The program culminates with the creation of student-driven Global Citizenship Projects, which are presented to a larger audience at a joint ceremony at the end of the academic year. Campfire begins with Professional Development for educators, which is designed to support effective implementation of the program, including the integration of digital tools, and facilitation of cross-cultural dialogue. The key feature of Campfire is the private online platform, built and curated for each pair of students to share activities and streamline cross-cultural interactions.
What does Campfire look like in the classroom?
Campfire is integrated into many different subject areas including Social Studies, World History, English Language Arts, Art, and more. Combining in-class and out-of-class time, educators guide students through specific activities from the Campfire curriculum, directing the students to post discussions, pictures, or videos on the online platform.
What language is Campfire conducted in?
The Campfire program takes place in English. Participating students and educators should feel comfortable using English language materials for activities, both oral and written. Educators feel comfortable communicating in English on emails.
Does Campfire align with standards?
The lessons in our Campfire curriculum are intentionally and explicitly linked to the EdSteps Global Competence Matrix , the 4 main elements being:
• Investigate the World – Students investigate the world beyond their immediate environment.
• Recognize Perspectives – Students recognize their own and others’ perspective.
• Communicate Ideas – Students communicate their ideas effectively with diverse audiences.
• Take Action – Students translate their ideas and findings into appropriate actions to improve conditions.
Additionally, Campfire follows the C3 Framework for Social Studies State Standards and focuses on developing the critical skills found in Common Core State Standards : critical thinking, problem solving, and analytical skills. Individual teachers may adapt these lessons to be congruent to specific national, state and local standards.
