Founder and Executive Director

AYANA International

California, United States

Presentation will be in English

Audience(s): Teachers, Students, Those who want to empower youth or learn more about design thinking

Session Description: Mahika, the 15-year-old founder of AYANA, will teach a session on youth empowerment and design thinking, which will be helpful both for teachers and adults who would like to empower youth to create change, as well as students who want to learn more about how they can make a difference regardless of their age.

About the Session: AYANA is a nonprofit initiative which uses an innovative model blending leadership skill development, introduction of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the design thinking process to empower young people (ages 12 to 25) in developing countries to design and implement projects that solve problems affecting them and their communities. AYANA has executed programs in Tanzania and South Africa and is working to develop programs in Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda.

Mahika will discuss her experience as a student starting with creating change at a local scale, by teaching local homeless/disadvantaged youth, to managing international projects in the areas of financial literacy, education, and youth empowerment. Mahika will present the design thinking process and how it can be taught to youth through the lense of solving local and global problems. Then, she will talk about ways teachers can globalize their classrooms and empower students to start thinking about problem-solving and creating tangible change, regardless of their age.
