People who speak some English can be found most places on Earth, but 90% of people don’t, except in the handful of mainly-English-speaking countries. There are more than 6000 languages in the world and billions of people are bilingual or multilingual without speaking any English.
This is a counter-intuitive truth that can only be properly understood by mastering a globally-applicable language, well enough to apply it in a wide variety of cultures.
Fortunately, there is a language which was designed to be learnt in the time generally available to primary schools, spoken by a few million people (including school children) and conveniently distributed over 5 continents.
This presentation will show the design features which make Esperanto 6 times quicker to master than Italian, 8 times quicker than Indonesian and 22 times quicker than Mandarin.
You will see photos of classes in 20 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and The Americas who are learning Esperanto as part of their Global Education and as an Apprenticeship Language, to help them learn other languages more efficiently later.
The presentation will include the evidence for effectiveness of the Apprenticeship Language Strategy, recommended by Professor Joseph Lo Bianco, of the University of Melbourne, the author of Australia’s Language Policy.
Finally, it will leave you with a list of resources and supports, which will enable your class or school to implement the strategy successfully and to give your young students the gifts of both bilingual brains and a global network of peers to build their self-concept as effective, connected Global Citizens.
