Global Outlook - STEAM up the STEM skills for Global Collaboration

Short Session Description (one line): Curriculum developed for students to develop Global outlook towards STEAM subjects through active communication and collaboration. 

Full Session Description (as long as you would like): The world economic forum states that 65% of primary students will enter completely new jobs in 2030. Thus to prepare them for an uncertain future, build skills in students. Thus, a new subject has been initiated to support students for the  future.

The objective of the session is to initiate educators and students to a new subject 'Global Outlook' which takes topics like 'Laundry Day; Redesigning your floor; Cheese on your plate; Let's save our bees; Oil spills and much more to orient students to develop a global mindset and international mindedness through STEAM exploration and in the process build skills for the future. 

Ex: Laundry Day - Students are expected to carry from home any pair of clothes which need to be washed. At school the clothes are collected and they are told to wash them. Students realize that clothes need to be categorized on basis of colour and material before washing them. Further, variety of stains are put on the clothes where they experiment with various cleaning agents to arrive at the best cleaning reagent. 

Further they research how laundry is carried out across the world. In India, laundry is done every day as humidity is high whereas in cold countries the rate is low. They study impact of climate on laundry. 

Lastly, they realize that laundry is not a woman's job but done by all thereby supporting gender equality.

In the lesson; 'Cheese on my plate' - Students in India were aware of only 3 to 4 types of cheese but during the lesson they became aware that there are more than 1700 varieties of cheese. Further they visited a cheese making factory and studied the processes and compared it to the cheese production in France , Japan and other countries. Finally, they organized a Food fiesta where students made items of cheese of different countries and sold it to the parents and teachers.

Thus every topic is chosen to bring in global awareness and create broader perspectives and promotes few major skills. In Laundry day the skill is experimentation and evaluation and the value is gender equality. 

The lesson outcome is that  educators have access to lessons created which focus on building skills like communication, collaboration, research, evaluation, analysis and critical thinking in students which supports them for the future. Also, they do not live in isolation depending upon a single textbook but research a topic across different countries to arrive at many stories and not be subjected to the danger of a single story as mentioned by Chimamanda Adichie.
