21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC)

While this is an existing program, there is one glaring limitation: its programs and solutions are limited to afterschool hours and only enrolled participants. We envision taking this program, which focuses on tutoring/homework help, enrichment, family engagement, and summer learning, and eliminating the barrier of "beyond school hours" only. We believe that to engage students as a global changemaker we must leverage their strengths through culturally relevant teaching, enrichment opportunities, and relationship-building through non-academic community events. We believe that we must also eliminate their barriers to engagement by offering family engagement sessions to develop families' economic opportunities and capacity for participation in their student's education. Additionally, realizing that for many students gaps in school and/or the lack of stability that summer brings, we propose gap-programs that combine enrichment, project-based learning, and family engagement opportunities. Creating a culture where students can access their agency as a global changemaker requires recognition of the need for a global focus when it comes to student needs and processes. After all, you must "Maslow before you can Bloom."
