Getting Started with Global Learning in Out-of-School Time (OST) Programs

Your Name and Title: Heather Loewecke, Assistant Director, Global Learning Beyond School

School or Organization Name: Center for Global Education at Asia Society

Co-Presenter Name(s): N/A

Area of the World from Which You Will Present: east coast, USA (New York, NY)

Language in Which You Will Present: English

Target Audience(s): youth development professionals / afterschool and summer learning educators (line staff and program directors; certified teachers working in OST programs)

Short Session Description (one line): Introductory steps for doing global education in non-formal/youth development/out-of-school programs

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

Knowledge about the rest of the world, skills to communicate and collaborate across boundaries, and values of respect and understanding are critical in the 21st century. This presents an urgent challenge and opportunity for afterschool, summer learning, and youth development programs as they continue their innovative work preparing youth for future success. A global learning framework supports youth’s 21st century skills development and prepares them for college, careers, and civic engagement. Session participants will be introduced to global competencies and their connection to youth development outcomes and learn how to integrate global learning activities into existing programming. Planning tools, sample activities, and global learning resources will also be provided.
