Short Session Description (one line): In this session attendees will learn how to bring curricula to life through leveraging their PLNs using social media, based on my personal accomplishments.

Full Session Description (as long as you would like): As educators strive to make learning relevant and engaging, a historically untapped resource is readily available--social media.  In the digital age, we as educators must be consistently building the capacity of our PLNs.  Further, we must utilize these international networks when working towards presenting content to students that is both authentic and enriching.  One strategy is to incorporate guest speakers virtually.  When I was planning a unit last year called "Infection:Detection," I realized this was a perfect opportunity to bring the curriculum to life from personal testimonials in the form of video chats.  My method for achieving this was to message my PLN through both Twitter and LinkedIn.  Sure enough a physician in India responded, and my students had the opportunity to learn about disease through actually speaking to a physician around the world.  This is the process I'd like to share with other leaders and educators.  The link presented below is a testimonial of the rewarding experience authored by the Indian physician and posted onto LinkedIn.

Another approach is to leverage Twitter.  Last spring, I connected with a group of ambitious educators in the space of 3D printing.  Through my suggestion, we launched Twitter's first, international 3D printing chat and community, #3dprintedu.  In only about six months, we are already represented across almost every continent and all across our country.  Through this presentation, I will elaborate on the process for embarking on and implementing this successful, global community directly impacting student achievement.

I see you are from Philadelphia and I am in New York and I do not know what a PLN is.  Others might have the same problem

Hi Robert,

Thanks for your question. A PLN or Professional Learning Network is a broad term for the group of professionals whom a person turns to for questions and suggestions. Typically, a PLN is mentioned in reference to social media, especially Twitter. For example, on Twitter I regularly ask others for suggestions based on their practice to impact my school community. I also leverage my Twitter PLN when presenting accomplishments and experiences based on my practice for the benefit of others. Does this answer your question?

Thanks,
Jon
