Target Audience(s): K-12 Educators, STEM Directors, Directors of Curriculum

Short Session Description (one line): Come learn about how making, fabbing and learning are making a global connection.

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

According to Edutopia, “the maker movement is a unique combination of artistry, circuitry and old-fashioned craftmanship.  Certainly, learning by doing or “making” has been happening since our ancestors refined the wheel.”  Moreover, as Gary Stager and Silvia Martinez asserted, “Maker classrooms are active classrooms.  In active classrooms, one will find engaged students, often working on multiple projects simultaneously, and teachers unafraid of relinquishing their authoritarian role.”  But how do we connect and collaborate with a new breed of maker educators.  In this interactive presentation, we will discuss the goals, objectives and program of the Marymount School of New York’s Making and Learning Institute. The primary focus of the MLI is to bring together - both in person and virtually - veteran and aspiring maker educators as we explore ways for students - and teachers - to collaborate and connect in designing solutions to real-world problems. The MLI also offers a new paradigm in professional development.  Instead of self-contained, teacher-centered workshops, participants are immersed in an experience that allows them to observe innovative practices in an innovative school setting.  Faculty connect in a variety of virtual opportunities: through an online maker educator cohort; virtual innovation coaching and Google/Twitter chats as well as in person through Fab Lab workshops and curriculum residences; and Design, Do, Discover, our capstone maker education experience.  We're creating a virtual, global community of making and learning educators!

Hi Eric -

This looks great, but it needs more specific language that ties to the mission of the conference. Can you elaborate on the global aspects of your work a bit more? Let me know when you're done editing, and I'll accept it...
