Your Name and Title: Alicia Jimenez

School or Organization Name: Earth Charter Center for Education for Sustainable Development

Area of the World from Which You Will Present: Costa Rica

Language in Which You Will Present: English

Target Audience(s): K-12 teachers, education professionals, academics interested in sustainability and education.

Short Session Description (one line): This session will focus on pedagogical elements to integrate values for sustainability in education.

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
“We stand at a critical moment in Earth’s history…” this is the first sentence of the Earth Charter, a declaration of ethical principles and values, launched in the dawn of the 21st Century. We feel that this “critical moment” continues, we see the issues on climate change, biodiversity loss, armed conflicts, violations to human rights and so forth. There is an emerging consciousness of a need of social transformation that comes from a change of paradigm, a change of worldview that emphasizes ethical principles and values associated with sustainability.

Education is a driver of social transformation, nonetheless, there has been a tendency in formal education settings on prioritizing the learning of practical skills, and theoretical knowledge, leaving behind processes of ethical and values reflection and clarification. In this presentation, I will argue that it is very important that education processes in all levels integrate spaces of dialogue, reflection and practice of the values and ethical principles associated with sustainability. This will galvanize the paradigm shift needed to address the complex issues we are facing.

In this session, I will present the Earth Charter, a declaration of ethical principles and values, as a relevant instrument that, when integrated in pedagogical processes, can be transformative in the way people think and relate with each other and with other living beings, expanding its responsibility for the common good to all life in this planet.

The presentation will highlight several elements associated with a pedagogy of the Earth Charter, offering examples of how this document has been used in different parts of the world to foster education for sustainability.
