Armed with the skills and digital tools of modern journalists, students from around the world are reporting on local and global issues that matter to them on, a media-rich student news organization.

Full Session Description (one paragraph minimum):

World Reporting. For students, by students.

Join a network of students from across the world who are reporting on provocative issues of global significance. Using new media tools and the Wordpress publishing platform, NewsAction reporters work with their peers to pinpoint problems and report on solutions locally and globally.

NewsAction is supported by such organizations as the IBO, the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting and the Global Issues Network. It is a collaborative effort of international bureau schools located in eight regions around the world. Students produce and edit their content collaboratively in classrooms, clubs and virtually with editors, creating podcasts, videos, polls, photography, as well as short and long-form articles.

In this discussion, we will share examples of student reporting and hear the students themselves discuss their experiences and the impact of their work. We will also show a video about the tools students use for reporting and filmmaking for NewsAction at the Washington International School, which heads the North American bureau. 

Finally, we will discuss the conceptual and technical details involved in organizing newsrooms, finding stories, posting articles and finding resources for both reporters and teachers.

Hi, everyone and thank you for coming to our session! I apologize for not being able to make it. I had unexplained technical issues. However, I’m thrilled to invite all secondary school students to participate in the NewsAction Contest! It will be judged by your peers from around the world. Final entries will be due on February 15th, 2013.

Using audio, video, photography, writing, or any combination of digital storytelling methods, you will answer the following question in your reporting: What will my future look like? by focusing on one of the following themes: Gender, Health and Education. Here are some topic examples: sex trafficking, LGBT rights, minority rights, HIV / AIDS, family planning, access to healthcare, teens’ personal choices, girls' education, literacy.

Your goal is to tell a great story, whatever that story may be. It must be factual and true, and it should attempt to consider multiple sides to the issue. Start from one person and tell how the story of that person relates to a bigger global issue. Finally, your story has to have at least three voices: an in-person interview with an individual affected by the issue, an expert on the topic (like a researcher, a teacher, a doctor, a professor, etc.), and any third voice of choice, for example, you, the narrator.
