Creating OER-s and Interactive STEM Applications in Mathematics Higher Education

Your Name and Title: Lucie Mingla Math Educator

School or Organization Name: New York City College of Technology, CUNY

Co-Presenter Name(s):

Area of the World from Which You Will Present: New York City

Language in Which You Will Present: English

Target Audience(s): Higher Education

Short Session Description: Using Technology for creating OER-s and Interactive STEM Applications

Full Session Description (as long as you would like).

In this talk I will focus on creating OER-s for an active learning as well as STEM applications in mathematics courses in Higher Education.

I will share my experiences through some of OER courses, videos and interactive activities at desmos.com (graphing calculator). that are available online to adapt, remix, and reuse.

I have shared Some of these experiences by presenting and co-presenting in CUNY, National and international conferences such as:

    • The largest mathematics meeting in the world took over, January 16-19, 2019; Co-Presenter
    • 30th International Conference on Technology in Collegiate M March 15–18, 2018, Washington, DC (ICTCM), Co-Presenter
    • MAA Metro New York Annual Meetings, Presenter

1. In Open-Lab CityTech you will find my Course Sites that are available to the faculty, students and public

What would be beneficial in my courses and project sites is:

  • The experience of creating, using OER, and sharing the materials with the community and the world.
  •  Researching for new OER-s through Creative Commons, adopting, reflecting, remixing and reusing them in my classroom. (Bringing the world-s experience in my own classroom).
  • Stirring the ship together with my students though reserch projects and presentations.
  • Delivering to my students the idea that they can contribute in this world with their valuable ideas,
  • At the same time I make it clear that they need to know that working through cc-licenced materials is a great benefit, but the attributions need to be recognized.

2. Using Desmos.com online graphing calculator to create and monitor interactive activities that are public.

  • The website desmos.com online: https://teacher.desmos.com/
This website is a worldwide teacher- use for customizing interactive activities.
  • In this website I have created  and shared my own interactive activities with STEM applications which are public.
  • The activities created in this website are from the teachers and faculty from allover the world. They are in different languages, but what is beneficial is that they are sharable and available to copy and adopt. Some of them are translated from other languages to English, but there are options of translating into other languages as well.
  • During these activities students are engaged in answering the questions from real life STEM applications, creating , using media, graphing, sketching, completing tables ..etc.
  • Their work can be monitored from the dashboard, so the feedback is immediate.
  • Students share their ideas and thoughts with the class about the concepts and develop their problem-solving skills.
  • Working in desmos classroom activities is worth of spreading.

Thank you for your proposal. Please review our mission and consider editing your proposal to reflect ties to our focus: https://www.globaleducationconference.org/page/our-mission. We are not a general education conference nor an ICT conference; all proposals must have some international component that is clearly referenced in the proposal. You may want to look at accepted proposals to see some examples:  https://www.globaleducationconference.org/forum/categories/gec-2019....

Please also make sure the objectives and outcomes for participants are clear in your proposal.

Let me know when you've made changes to your proposal, and I'll review it again.

Thank you,
