Short Session Description: Using news as a source of learning about other countries's problems and debunking myths grown up by media
Session Description: Information we get from news about what is going on in the world can be biased, distorted or incomplete. It could create a wrong perception of the causes and effects and become a starting point for discrimination and human rights violations.
Yet, the same news can become a powerful tool and a starting point to learn more about the world. Students can get a useful experience of verifying information, learning more about another region or country and getting in touch with real witnesses. All these are important parts of investigative journalism as well as a huge step forward in developing critical thinking and analyzing skills.
Working with real-world issues will help students to get in touch with their peers in other countries to get information first-hand, compare different data with what they get from news resources, analyze it and, as a result, become more advanced media users and better cyber citizens.
During the session, I will propose how teachers should choose and talk about the news with students of different age, give some ideas and resources they could use for their projects and share my experience in fact-checking and decomposing the news items from my editorial experience.
