Book launch by 17 year old filmmaker/writer Kasha Sequoia Slavner

17 YR. OLD CANADIAN PHOTOGRAPHER/FILMMAKER/WRITER

& SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR

LAUNCHES NEW E-BOOK ON AMAZON

January 17th, 2015 - TORONTO, ONTARIO,  Kasha Sequoia Slavner, a Canadian teenage photographer/filmmaker, 3x UN youth delegate and recent recipient of the first ever Kim Phuc Youth Award for Peace, recently launched her new book, Reflections of the Sunrise Storyteller- A Journey into the Heart as a Global Citizen© in Toronto along with a 32-piece photography exhibition Travels Into the Heart©.

The exhibition which had its’ inaugural launch in New York in March 2015 and then in Portland Oregon in July, featured photography from the 6-month journey she took with her mother last year for the purpose of filming an inspiring crowdsource funded feature documentary, The Sunrise Storyteller©.

The film, which will be released later this year, features some of the stories of hope and human triumph that are reflected in Kasha’s photography, showcasing what it means to be a compassionate global citizen. As a social entrepreneur since the young age of 8, Kasha uses her photography and filmmaking to contribute to local and global causes.

After attending the UN as a youth delegate at 14 she was very motivated to start using her creative talents to raise awareness for social justice issues and founded The Global Sunrise Project which acts as the hub for the various media projects she’s creating.

Her stories are a teenager’s account of triumph over adversity and the power of resilience and creativity, with heart-to-heart connection, to change the world.  Kasha’s work is intended to raise awareness and act as a call to action for those waking up to their own potential for meaningful civic engagement and empowered leadership.

Leaving from New York City on the morning of Kasha’s 16th birthday, she set out to make connections with and interview people all across East Africa and Southeast Asia for her film.

Along the way, Kasha accumulated over 130 hours of footage and 20,000 photographs.

Her newly launched e-book, Reflections of the Sunrise Storyteller© - A Journey into the Heart as a Global Citizen, features over 200 pages and 100+ high resolution photographs from Kasha’s travels, as well as reflections she wrote about her experiences around the world while filming her documentary. The e-book format is a wonderful resource for teachers in the classroom for ages 8+ and has already garnered some serious attention as reflected in the following reviews:

“Beautifully and thoughtfully written, Kasha Slavner’s Reflections of the Sunrise Storyteller is filled with stories and experiences to inspire and encourage anyone who seeks to contribute to a more peaceful world”

National Geographic Learning

“Kasha sets an example for young people around the world to follow. This book will inspire you to look deep within and create your own extraordinary journey to impact others for good.”

-Adam Braun, NY Times Bestselling author of “The Promise of a Pencil”

“Kasha is an exceptional young feminist peace leader. Canadian Voice of Women for Peace was eager to recognize this by naming her the inaugural recipient of our Kim Phuc Award to publicly recognize her long record of creative projects and organizing skills dedicated to making this planet a better place. Our world critically needs her artful “voice” to be heard.”

Janis Alton

Co-Chair, Canadian Voice of Women for Peace

“Drawing on her experiences and travels, Kasha outlines what being a global citizen means to her and puts forward a positive view of the world rooted in hope and optimism. Given the divisive forces threatening to tear our world apart, Kasha’s outlook will undoubtedly serve as an inspiration to adults and young people alike. Her work is ultimately a clarion call for celebrating diversity and extending one’s empathy beyond our national borders.”

Michael Sheldrick, Director, Policy and Advocacy, The Global Poverty Project

“There are some who talk, some who dream and a rare few who do. Then, there’s that even smaller pack who talk, dream and do in service of something bigger than them. That’s Kasha Slavner. At an astonishingly young age, she sees the world through eyes that reveal an ageless and deeply generous soul, then offers wisdom and work in the quest to make a difference. In this beautiful

new book, Kasha takes us along with her, sharing striking images through the lens of her camera, and moving stories in a way only she can tell them. Grab a copy, but more importantly, learn from her spirit.”

Jonathan Fields, author and founder of Good Life Project

At a young age, Kasha’s accomplishments have been extraordinary. Her work has already been commissioned by National Geographic Learning, Nelson Publishing and The Matador Network.

She has also written for The Huffington Post and several other publications.
