In Gameboy we Trust

Even by my standards, this has been a term of dizzying highs and gut-wrenching lows. One of the highs has been the group of students looking at the inquiry question "How can a science concept be taught through a computer game?". These students have worked with a great deal of independence from me, teaching themselves Gamemaker, and using virtual experts such as Pat Kenneally, a software developer (amongst other things) in Canberra.…

What Does It Mean to Think Beyond Borders?

This is neither a geography question nor a simple academic concern. This question is the first step for anyone seeking proactive solutions to the HIV/AIDS pandemic, global climate change, food security, equity, racial and gender discrimination, and just about any other social ill one can imagine. For, if we haven’t learned to think beyond borders, and we don’t know how to help others do it, how can we expect to overcome the hurdles of economics, diversity of values and thought, and geography…

How to Breathe

I thought I'd do an opinion piece today. There is something that has been bothering me for quite some time, and I'd like to express my thoughts on it.

I have an issue with the word "e-learning". I was wondering at what point we are going to ditch the "e" in front of "learning". I assume "e" stands for electronic. Did we have "p-learning" before that, when kids used pens for learning? It seems, to some, at least, the tool that is used to make the learning happen is considered more… Continue

Strikes in Uganda's Education

Makerere University lecturers are on strike and the students have been sent home. The government has threatened to sack the striking lecturers.

Today, the third term of the secondary and primary academic calendar begins, but teachers and the umbrella Uganda National Teachers Union are on strike too. The teachers, who want a 100 per cent pay raise, first went on strike in July.

All the strike have a 'money' element in them.

The government insists that there is no money to…

Welcome to 1984

In 1984, I was in Grade 4, and was particularly good at maths. I don't remember liking it, but I remember being good at it. I know many of my kids are good at maths, but I'd like them to like it as much as I do (now), too.

This week at CNPS, we're going to be using arrays to represent the distributive law using arrays. I plan to engage the kids by using this edited version of a TED talk, which showcases some pretty amazing mental mathematics (and using the distributive law, too! in… Continue

Success and Failure

I'm pretty hard on myself when things go wrong. I wanted to share a success and a failure.

The first is the success. Some of our girls have chosen to investigate the question "Why do people in different countries eat different foods?". To do this, they are creating their own episode of the TV show "Food Safari", complete with the essential ingredients of the cuisine, and of course the dish which involves most of the essential ingredients...…
