The Denominator!

Fractions. They seem to occupy such a large amount of the maths curriculum, and no matter how many ways of looking at them you engage the kids in, I often wonder to myself, “Do they really get it?”. In fact, I often wonder to myself, “Do I really get it myself?”.

I put this to the test recently when trying to teach multiplication of fractions. A fragment of teaching from my own schooling came to me – when you multiply two fractions, you multiply the numerators and denominators. But… Continue

SPIRITUAL INTELLIGENCE

I was discussing on SPIRITUAL INTELLIGENCE. In one school, I explained SQ,EQ AND IQ as follows-

1) IQ- means "MATTER IS TOTALY OVER MIND"

2)EQ- means- "MIND IS OVER MATTER TO LIMITED EXTENT"

3) SQ- means "SPIRIT IS TOTALLY OVER IQ & EQ OF MIND"

IT IS THEREFORE ESSENTIAL TO INCORPORATE EDUCATION OF SQ IN ALL EDUCATIONAL COURSES FROM PLAY SCHOOL LEVEL ONWARDS TO TRANFORM THE PRESNT POVERTY STRICKEN AND VIOLENT WORLD TO A WORLD OF PROSPERITY WITH…

I Speak for the Trees!

The journey from secondary to primary teaching has been full of rewards, but it certainly hasn’t been easy. I find myself often having to teach well outside my field of expertise. However, when I saw our sustainability inquiry coming up, I knew exactly how I would introduce it – The Lorax.

The Lorax isn’t exactly the most innovative way of introducing sustainability, but I tried something different when we made conclusions in our inquiry. Students chose one of food, shelter, mobility… Continue

Part III cover page, and chapter Prejudice

This post begins Part III of Sailing Faith: The Long Way Home, about our family's 4 1/2 year circumnavigation of the world on a sailboat. Today’s post will be my last post of chapters from the book, taking us through the first 100 pages with their corresponding photographs. The book is 249 pages, and the story becomes more complex as demonstrated in today’s post. Visit Sailing Faith: The Long Way Home, for more information on the…

Crushed Beneath the Wheels

Whilst I am loving being a primary school teacher, I do miss the science teaching at secondary level. Science seems to be one of those subjects that draws out strong reactions amongst students – some absolutely love it, others carry with them a great deal of negativity about it. It has been my goal at primary school to develop as much good feeling about science as possible.

Firstly, a little about how I teach science. In my opinion, the essence of science is the ability to think… Continue
