Why Do We Need Honey Bees?

You may have never even considered a bee except for the fact that they sting, but if bees especially the honey bees have very important jobs. If you happen to love/like honey you can appreciate bees for that. However, without bees and pollination we would not have 2/3 of the foods we eat today. So, if you are unaware of the theories of why bee colonies are dying take time to view the videos and think about what your life would be like if there were no more bees to pollinate flowers, fruit… Continue

Online Writing: What really changes?

This project was the first of many in an attempt to characterize the differences between online writing and more traditional formats. Students in my Dual-Credit Biology course were divided into two groups upon culmination of a biochemistry unit. Half of the class wrote a comprehensive unit summary in a traditional format which was turned in directly to the teacher. The other half of the class composed a summary in an online forum for a much wider audience (Ning network).

Are you a *teacher* or an *educator*?

Do you consider yourself a teacher or an educator? Think about it. It might change the way you look at yourself and your job. :)

P.S. You comments would be very welcome.

Readin', Writin', and 'Rithmatic ... and technology?

The old song mentioned "readin', writin', and 'rithmatic" as the essentials for school studies. Should technology be added? And...whatever happened to the writin' part? It seems that writing and penmanship don't seem to count as much as reading and math. I think it counts even more today. It's one way to separate the literate from the not so literate.

What do you think?

Does spelling still count?

When I was a boy (about a million years ago) the teachers used to say, "Spelling counts." From what I see written, I wonder. Does spelling still count...in your classroom?

Blended Learning Instructors

Hi,

After getting negative responses from educators and researchers in institutes of higher learning in my country of residence, I contacted experts in the field of blended learning. I got negative responses from almost all of them saying that one campus would not have 20 willing instructors who use blended learning. I contacted my mentor and got the go to use multiple campuses worldwide and use virtual technologies to conduct the interviews. I am now feeling a lot better and ready to… Continue

The Story Starter

One of the things I've been interested in is encouraging students to write. One of the things that prevent people from starting to write is that they don't have any ideas for a story. That's where The Story Starter comes in. It provides over 300 million ideas for stories. [Yes, it really is 300 million!] Each idea is presented in the form of a sentence. The Story Starter was named as one of the top 101 Web… Continue
