I am a 4th grade teacher in Culver City, CA! I am looking to incorporate a more global perspective in my gold rush unit this year and am looking for any teacher(s) in Australia that are interested in collaborating around this historical topic!! I would love to see this become a compare/contrast style project with a good deal of interaction between students from both countries via video chats, blogging, etc. I was thinking of 4 topics for the students to explore:
1. Impact on the Natives
2. Discrimination in the Gold Fields
3. Culture in the Gold Camps
4. Roles of men and women
The first “meeting" would probably be done via video chat to introduce the classes to one another and then to introduce the project and team members responsible for each topic of research.
From there, each group of students would research and develop questions to initiate to those students in Australia regarding their topic and vice versa, the students from Australia would do the same for our 4th graders. They would document these questions via a blog. After posting to the blog, students would comment and provide feedback. From there, we would present our findings in a multimedia fashion, perhaps and iBook? Not sure how that looks at the moment, but as we get started we can see what type of culminating piece would be best.
This is just a snapshot of what the project might look like. I am willing to tweak and work with other teachers to enhance this further. Please contact me if you are interested in collaborating with an AWESOME group of 4th graders in California!
