Microsoft names Gayaza among best global schools

From Daily Monitor

Gayaza High School in Mpigi District has been recognised by the Microsoft Corporation as one of the best academic institutions in the world.
The honour comes after the school participated in a world-wide competition in which 80 schools were shortlisted.

In an e-mail sent out on Saturday, the organisers of the competition named Gayaza among schools that have qualified to participate at a global conference, the Microsoft School Pitch competition, along with others from Chile, Britain, Singapore, Canada and Germany.

The competition is the first in which schools globally will be given a chance to develop programmes to promote the use technology in their setting. Finalists will be expected to pitch their ideas during the Global Forum in Barcelona, Spain on March 13.

When asked what the achievement meant to the school, Ms Victoria Kisalare, the head teacher, said: “I hope I do not sound arrogant, but ICT has been our niche for a long time. Almost 90 per cent of our teachers have laptops. It is not by policy but increasingly, this is what is required in our school. Our work is done online; the students do their homework on a network and they are marked in the same way.”

She said the school aims at becoming a model for other communities, adding that it has partnered with a Universal Primary Education school and Nangabo Sub-county to provide ICT solutions.
Gayaza became a Microsoft Pathfinder school in 2011.
